MEDALLIONS GERMANY AFTER 1900
Lot 10686
Lot 10686
Opening bid
500 €
Lot of 16 medals and plaques by the sculptor Fritz Nuss, mostly bronze and mostly from the 70s. Includes scenes such as 'Phoenix from the Fire' and portraits of Goya, Hölderlin, Lucas Cranach and Caspar David Friedrich. Some with suspension loops on the back, a few slightly spotted. Grades extremely fine and freshly cast. Together with the book 'Marzinek, Otto / Heuschele, Otto: Fritz Nuss. Medaillen. Stuttgart / Aalen 1977'. The lot was assembled by the Churfranconian artist J. Speth in appreciation of its artistic expression. Fritz Nuss (1907-1999) trained as a chaser in Schwäbisch Gmünd and later, from 1952 to 1972, was professor of sculptural design at the college of design in the same town; the principal subject of his sculpture is the human body. Previously, as a registered NSDAP member during the National Socialist era, he had belonged to the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts and exhibited at all the 'Great German Art Exhibitions' in Munich from 1937 to 1944; Bormann and Hitler each purchased one of his sculptures in 1942 and 1944. While his abstract and expressive figures of the 50s and 60s appear rather static, those of the 70s and 80s gain more movement and lose their static quality. Fritz Nuss also worked as a medallist. Among other works, his design for the 5 DM 1971 commemorating the 500th anniversary of Albrecht Dürer's birth was struck (J. 410).
